A Dozen Lists: Executive function that works!

Dozen is a system that visually manages your executive function. The system is composed of twelve lists. Each list contains cards that represent all the stuff you’re dealing with to run your life.

It contains a card for each project, person, and organization that you interact with, as well as important objects like your car, computer and phone – basically any relationship in your life that generates things you need to keep track of.Dozen is a system that visually manages your executive function with twelve lists. Dozen will help you:

  • Externalize executive function
  • Separate deciding from doing
  • Focus on one thing at a time

The cards

A basic card looks like this. The colored label indicates whether it represents a project, person, or admin entity.

Cards have a few other handy abilities that are available when you need them. We’ll get into that later.

The lists

Your cards move around between twelve lists, as you process them and get stuff done. These lists are the heart and soul of the system. The list a card is in shows you its current status.

The process

Ideas are captured, defined, sorted, assigned, and filed.
The output is a well-defined list that tells you what to do today.

The tools

Trello is a free (for our purposes) web-based list-making application, that works very well for implementing the Dozen system. It includes a robust mobile app, so your system can be with you wherever you go.
